Improved Union Rights. Better Universities.

The Union is critical to improving your pay, employment conditions, and health and safety.

What we can win

Improved rights for union delegates and members, including increased time-release, access to staff email lists, access to staff inductions, and at least 10 days of trade union leave per member each year.

Why it is important

Union rights are about making sure your rights at work are protected. All our conditions, pay and rights at work, exist because people like you acted collectively through the union. This claim is about giving your union representatives the time, resources, and access they need to support you and your colleagues, enforce agreements, and help build fairer workplaces.

You have the right to join a union, to be meaningfully represented, to take part in collective workplace decisions, and to bargain collectively through your union.

FAQs

Why is access to emails important?

You have the right to information about your workplace rights and to be represented. That’s why your union must be able to communicate directly with you and your colleagues and to share vital information about your pay, conditions, and protections.

If management blocks union communication, it undermines your freedom to choose and prevents you from making informed decisions about your future at work. You can always opt out of union emails if you prefer, but you should have the choice.

Why do delegates need time for union work?

When you have strong union representation, you’re better equipped to push for fair pay, manageable workloads, and job security.

Union representatives do a lot of extra work such as helping to resolve issues, enforce agreements, and representing people in tough situations. Having access to union leave is about making sure they have the time and resources to do that work properly.

Ultimately, union rights help improve conditions for everyone, not just union members.
